Queue the wail of your dogs beloved squeak toy. Then again and again and again and again. what the heck is it about that dang-on sound that Fido loves so much?

The most common theory as to why dogs are so attracted to squeaky toys is that they are essentially rubber or plush versions of the small prey animals that dogs would hunt in the wild. The squeaking noise resembles the last cries of small rodents (gross, but true) - a sound which must be extremely satisfying to a predator.

Another theory is that the dog is actually really enjoying the interactive quality of the toy. When the dog squeezes the toy, it responds with a non-threatening, almost whimper like sound. So while you dogs natural tendency for chewing is being satisfied, there is a simultaneous cause-and-effect game occurring.

You might notice that your dog seems to lose enthusiasm for a toy when and if the squeak mechanism has been removed. So it does seem as though the squeaking aspect of the toy is what the dog is drawn to, rather the form of the toy itself. Once the squeaker is has been removed, the prey is "dead" and your dog's job is complete.
