The summer heat can be tough to bear for anyone, but especially for your dog. From the thick fur coat to the fact that their body temperature isn’t as easily regulated as ours, some pups can have a hard time staying cool. Be a great pet parent and take these simple measures to avoid overheating your pooch.

Hydration is Key

Staying hydrated is an important part of keeping your dog happy, healthy, and cool in the summer. Make sure your pup always has access to at least one water source. Setting up multiple bowls of water when your dog is going to be outside for longer than a few minutes will give them a backup if they happen to spill one or drink all of one before you can refill it. On those especially hot days, you can add ice cubes to their water bowl for an extra bit of cooling power. Carry a bottle of water with you when you go on walks for on-the-go hydration.

Avoid Cement and Embrace the Shade

Your pooch takes in and releases heat through their paws, so walking them on hot cement will increase their body temperature quickly. Walk them in the grass or dirt when you can, or consider buying them booties to shield their feet from the high temps. Never tie your dog up where there is only access to the cement. Always make sure there’s a shady area available for your pet to take refuge if the sunlight gets to be too much.

Time for a Trim

If your dog’s coat is especially heavy, consider taking a trip to the groomer’s for a trim, to relieve some of the weight. However, never shave your dog’s fur completely, as it helps protect from sunburn and provides a level of insulation from direct sunlight.

It’s All About the Timing

Even if it’s tempting, the heat isn’t an excuse to forgo walking your pup completely. Exercise is just as important now as it is any other season. To make it more comfortable for the both of you, go for your walks in the early morning or evening hours, when there will be less direct sunlight and lower temperatures.

Play in the Pool

There’s nothing more refreshing than jumping into cold water on a hot summer’s day. Play outside with your pooch without worrying about overheating, by exclusively playing in the water. Try throwing your pup's favorite Jolly Ball into your pool or lake for a game of fetch, or buy a kiddie pool to fill up for your dog’s enjoyment when left outside. Be sure to have plenty of water-safe dog toys to both prevent boredom and encourage water play.

Don’t Leave Your Dog in a Parked Car

This offense is so horrible that it’s actually illegal in some states. Your car’s temp can increase to unbearable levels within minutes, upping the chances of your dog suffering a heat stroke. Despite the common misconception, leaving your windows cracked will not affect the temperature enough to save your dog the peril of being locked in a hot car. Never, ever leave your dog unattended in a parked vehicle.

Watch for the Signs

Sometimes overheating and dehydration happen even if you’re careful and take the necessary steps to prevent it. Watch to see if your pet is panting heavily, drooling, vomiting, or collapses. Take immediate steps to cool your dog down and make sure you get to a veterinarian if you think your dog may be experiencing heatstroke.

At Jolly Pets, we have plenty of waterproof toys for you and your dog to enjoy during the summer. Use the hot weather as an excuse to spend more time in the water, and give your dog a summer to remember, while also staying safe and cool.
